Bit of a catch up.

Posted in Uncategorized on November 3, 2014 by neilfinlay

I have been a bit useless at keeping up to date on this site lately so here is a run down of what has been going on.
I have been having a lot of fun with ‘The Remarkables ‘lately. It has been a busy year starting off with a guest appearance at the Whare Flat festival in Dunedin which was a real pleasure and followed up with an appearance at the Hamilton Acoustic Music Festival which was also a lot of fun with a good bunch of friends. This weekend (8th November) we are off to play at Lott Larsens acoustic music festival at Oparau which we are looking forward to. This is a new festival for me and it’ll be good to get down there and cheek it out.

Also ‘The Remarkables’ , at this time of writing are putting the finishing touches on a CD which we hope to have released before Christmas. If you want to put your name down for a copy or three let me know and I’ll be happy to make sure I get one or three out to you.

You can check out The Remarkables website by going to Don’t search for The Remakrables without putting the word ‘music’ on the end ‘cos you will end up with a dozen or so pages on skiing and snow and stuff.

We are also playing at the Auckland Folk Festival out at Kumeu over Ak anniversary weekend. So if you like a bit of camping and sitting around picking and having a beer or two with your acoustic music, this could be for you.

See ya

With Max Purdie at the Billfish Cafe

Posted in Uncategorized on February 28, 2013 by neilfinlay

I have the pleasure of working with an old mate of mine Max Purdie.  Max is a very fine piano player and recently he and I have been playing a few gigs at ‘The Billfish Cafe’ , a restaurant/bar on Auckland’s waterfront.  Come down and see us, we’ll be there, playing some blues,  from 2.30 till 5.30 this Sunday the 3rd of March and other dates as they happen.  I’ll try to let you all know when.  The Billfish does a very nice line in seafood and is right on the edge of Westhaven waterfront. Not a bad way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

See you there!

Live blues update

Recently Peter Parnham has departed these shores for a year or two in London so the band we have called The Remarkables has pressed Gary Trotman into bass-playing duties which he has taken on with his usual sure-footed style and has fitted in seamlessly. Also, Robbie Laven has become the fourth and crucial member of the band and brings with him a vast experience and it’s great to have him along.

So now The Remarkables consists of Bryan Christianson on banjo, Gary Trotman on bass, Robbie Laven on fiddle, mandoline and washboard and myself on guitar and a fair amount of singing. We play a mixture of blues, bluegrass, western swing plus a bit of jazz and with Robbie along it won’t be long before we include a bit of gypsy swing.

In the meantime I have joined forces with jazz/blues piano player Max Purdie and we have a few gigs lined up at the Billfish Cafe in Westhaven Ak. This is a great little cafe that specialises in seafood and is situated right on the waterfront. Come and check us out. Our next gig there is on Sunday the 24th Feb 2013 from 1.30 to 4.30pm.
